Are your Hormones Creating Havoc!

Good Health

Eating rubbish?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, two small glands found at the top of each kidney. Everyone knows about adrenaline, few understand another important hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for diverse and highly important regulation of body functions.

It controls the following:-

  • Regulation of glucose, protein and fatty acids including essential fatty acids
  • Enhances mood and sense of well being
  • Regulation of the immune response at a cellular level
  • Regulation of inflammation
  • Regulation of blood pressure and blood vessels
  • It maintains connective tissue such as bone, muscle and skin.

There’s more though – read on….

  • Stimulates increase concentrations of glucose in the blood
  • Conversion of muscle into sugar leading to wasting muscles
  • Stops glucose uptake by muscles and fatty tissue thereby increasing blood sugar levels
  • Stimulates fat breakdown in fatty tissue.

So, the important facts to take from the above is that cortisol can be ANTI-INFLAMMATORY and IMMUNE REGULATING but can also PROMOTE INFLAMMATION and IMMUNE BREAKDOWN.  The way your body produces cortisol governs which way it behaves.

These days it is the excess of cortisol, or to put it another way, cortisol being produced all the time at a steady drip, drip, drip into your system that creates havoc with your health. Cortisol in short bursts is healthy – dripping away continuously is seriously BAD for health.

Cortisol is possibly the biggest drive behind today’s modern diseases. Everyone has heard of ADRENALINE. Adrenaline gives an up-feeling or a surge of energy. CORTISOL moderates that feeling at the appropriate time in healthy individuals, but if it continues at low levels in the unhealthy individual they have the classic signs of anxiety, stress and tiredness. All these lead to sickness of the sort I call life style sicknesses.

Management of stress levels is the best way to avoid the problem. Leaving time to relax in a healthy way, like walking in the countryside or by the seaside is recommended. Unhealthy relaxation, such as watching television for periods longer than two hours, robs the body of the potential to turn off the damaging side of cortisol. The right balance is achieved by good nutrition, exercise and recovery. Making space for recovery is vital for health improvements.

A list of negative impacts:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Moodiness
  • Insomnia
  • Ulcers
  • Poor memory
  • No resistance to infection
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or loss of menstruation
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Alzheimer’s (Dementia)

The best test to see if you are in a state of constant low level cortisol production is to measure your waist to hip ratio. A lower hip measurement with a bigger waist measurement is a sure sign you are heading towards, or may already have, SYNDROME X or Cortisol dysregulation. Next time you look at yourself in the mirror, decide if you have the apple shaped body, defined as bird legs/round tummy! This is an indicator for SYNDROME X !

At times like this you will have an increase in appetite, cravings for sweets, salty snacks and fatigue when you used to have energy.

Cortisol switched on all the time produces

  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • High fat to muscle ratio

Syndrome X effects are as follows

  • Breakdown of muscles
  • Breakdown of tendons and ligaments
  • Reduced synthesis of protein
  • Reduced levels of DHEA, growth hormone, IGF-1 and TSH
  • Drop in the use of calories from food.
  • Increase in blood sugar levels
  • Insulin insensitivity leading to diabetes type 2
  • Carbohydrate cravings with salty food cravings.
  • Body fat increases because metabolism slows down
  • Body fat accumulates in abdominal region.

Does it get any worse! Well, yes it does. I’m constantly surprised by those people who think they can get away with poor dietary habits and stressful lives and not be seriously affected by it. One of the saddest parts of many people’s attitude to their own health is they think they can get away with all of the above and then pop along to the doctor when they need fixing.

So what comes after SYNDROME X if no action to take responsibility happens?

Catabolism or System Breakdown

  • Muscle loss
  • Bone loss
  • Immune malfunction
  • Brain shrinkage
  • Allergies and asthma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • MS
  • .Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Even longer exposure leads to immune cell death and immune system breakdown leaving no immune function whatsoever.

Why use supplements? WHY NOT! Is my answer.

If you are busy and stressed, can’t get away to relax properly and any way, there is always the threat of financial ruin hanging over you or just paying the mortgage, then supplements are an easy way to solve a nutrition problem until you can get yourself sorted out. Targeted nutrition in which support is given to blood sugar regulation, essential fatty acids for mood and depression, adrenal gland support and liver clearance support all help in the process of RECOVERY

The hair Mineral analysis will identify whether your system is stressed and wired or if you have reached stressed and tired. Or worse! Total exhaustion.

It will identify why this may be happening by revealing your electrolyte balance (hydration and cellular function).

It will reveal how you are processing your food, whether you have a leaky gut, whether you are malnourished, whether your thyroid is functioning at a sub clinical low level.

It will reveal if you levels of toxins are very high. Toxic overload, because of poor lifestyle or just plain unawareness, is a major cause of Stress to the body (therefore a reason to produce lots of extra cortisol when you don’t need it).

It will reveal if you are an insomnia type 1 or 2 profile.

Plus it will give you a sound nutritional supplement programme to address all the problems you have with dietary changes to make you feel much better.
