The ancient spring in Gainford has a spiritual quality, and is known as a Holy well or Sacred Spring. The spring produces sulphurous water, an important mineral for health. It was found by accident; in searching for coal in the mid 1800s the borehole produced a spring of water.

Located on the banks of the River Tees, the water has healing qualities. Sulphur is an essential element for all life.Your body needs sulfur to build and fix your DNA and protect your cells from damage that can lead to serious diseases such as cancers. Sulfur also assists your body to metabolize food and contributes to the health of your skin, tendons, and ligaments.

If you are passing by, park on the roadside and go down to the Spa to sip the water. A warning. sulphur has a unique smell – a bit strong but not harmful!
